A Time for Planning

December 4, 2015
Reflection by Jane Hale

How do I set priorities? I’ll be honest, if I'm not intentional about it, the things that get priority are the things that are yelling the loudest at any given moment! Beginning my day in prayer—quiet, still, centered, and with a heart open to the Holy—helps me to hear that still, small voice, and reminds me of who (and whose) I am. When considering my calendar, I do not have to be a slave to the Tyranny of Busy; in fact, I am invited to live into the sacred rhythm of God’s life-giving creation, itself.  Time spent resting in the presence of God helps me to better discern and keep God’s and my true priorities in perspective (hint: they have more to do with life-giving work and relationships, than never-ending laundry lists). Friends, how do you set priorities in your life?

God of Love and Life, we seek to know your heart.  Help us to resist those loud and clanging things that would distract us with busyness, and, instead, open our hearts and minds wide so that we might faithfully discern the work that you would have us do.  Amen.

  2. A running, color-coded time inventory is one resource I use. If there is too much of any one color... there is work to be done on scaling back to find balance. That being said, some weeks, the color is nearly one solid hue. Thank goodness it only occurs about twice a year.
